You do not need an agency to get the SEO basics right. This checklist covers the things that matter most for a small business website, in the order that usually brings the quickest results. Most steps take a few minutes with free tools.
Start with a baseline scan
Run your homepage through our free SEO checker. Note the score and the top issues, then work through the list below. Scan again at the end to see how far you have come.
Technical basics (checks 1 to 6)
- Your site loads over HTTPS. Most hosting panels offer a free certificate. Confirm it with the SSL Checker.
- One version of your domain. http, https, www and non-www should all end up at the same address with a single 301 redirect.
- No accidental noindex. Make sure your important pages do not carry a
noindextag. Website builders sometimes add it while a site is "under construction". - A clean robots.txt. It should not block your pages, styles or scripts.
- An XML sitemap listed in robots.txt and submitted to Google Search Console.
- No broken links. Check your main pages with the Broken Link Checker and fix or remove dead links.
On-page SEO (checks 7 to 12)
- A unique title on every page, about 50 to 60 characters, with your main service and location near the start. Example: "Emergency Plumber in Dubai | Acme Plumbing".
- A meta description of 140 to 160 characters that explains what you offer and why someone should click.
- One H1 per page that clearly states the topic, followed by H2 subheadings.
- Enough useful text. Thin pages with a few lines rarely rank. Explain your service, prices or process, and answer common questions.
- Descriptive image alt text such as "technician repairing a water heater", not "IMG_2041".
- Short, readable URLs like
/services/water-heater-repair.
Speed and mobile (checks 13 to 16)
- Mobile friendly layout with a viewport tag and readable text. Test it with the Mobile-Friendly Checker.
- Compressed images. Large photos are the most common reason small business sites feel slow.
- Compression and caching turned on in your hosting panel.
- Fewer plugins and scripts. Remove sliders, chat widgets and trackers you do not use.
Local SEO and trust (checks 17 to 20)
- Name, address and phone number on every page, usually in the footer, written the same way everywhere online.
- A Google Business Profile with correct hours, photos and the link to your website.
- LocalBusiness structured data so search engines understand your details. Create it with the Schema Markup Generator and test it with the Schema Validator.
- Good social previews. Add Open Graph tags so links shared on WhatsApp, Facebook and LinkedIn show a proper title and image. The Open Graph Checker shows the preview.
Keep it going
SEO is not a one-time job. Add a new helpful page or article every month, ask happy customers for reviews, and scan your site after every big change. Your public report keeps a score history, so you can see exactly when things improve.
