When you scan a website with our SEO checker, you get a score out of 100 and a letter grade. It is a quick way to see how healthy a page is, but the number only helps if you know what sits behind it.
How the score is calculated
Each check, such as the title tag, HTTPS or image alt text, has a weight based on how much it affects search performance. A passed check earns its full weight, a warning earns half and a failed check earns nothing. The score is the share of points earned, so a single heavy problem can pull it down more than several small ones.
- Heavy checks: the page returns status 200, it can be indexed, it has a title tag, it uses HTTPS and it works on mobile.
- Medium checks: meta description, a single clear H1, content length, canonical tag, robots.txt and sitemap.
- Light checks: social sharing tags, favicon, deprecated HTML and similar polish.
So what is a good score?
- 90 to 100 (A): excellent. The technical basics are done; growth now comes from content and links.
- 80 to 89 (B): good. A few fixes will make the page fully sound.
- 65 to 79 (C): average. Usually one or two important issues plus several small ones.
- 50 to 64 (D): weak. Something important is missing, often HTTPS, a meta description or mobile setup.
- Below 50: serious problems, such as a page that cannot be indexed or returns an error.
You can see how other websites compare on our rankings page. Keep in mind that a perfect technical score does not guarantee the first position on Google: relevance, content quality and links from other sites still decide who wins. A high score simply removes the obstacles.
Fix issues in this order
- Anything that blocks indexing. A
noindextag, a robots.txt rule or an error status means the page cannot rank at all. Fix these before anything else. - HTTPS and redirects. Install an SSL certificate, redirect every version of your domain to one https address, and check it with the Redirect Checker.
- Title and meta description. They are what people see in search results. Use the SERP Snippet Preview to keep them from being cut off.
- Mobile and speed. Add a viewport tag, turn on compression and defer heavy scripts. The Page Speed Checker shows what slows the page down.
- Content and structure. One H1 that states the topic, logical H2 sections and enough useful text to answer the visitor's question.
- Polish. Alt text, Open Graph tags, structured data and the remaining warnings.
